Generally, when a problem begins to arise is the time that you need to start adjusting his diet. Generally, a healthy dog that is getting old doesn't really have to change much of the foods he eats from when he was younger.

If you start noticing that there might be some problems with some vital organs as he is getting older then this is a sign that you probably should increase the amount of proteins that he is receiving. By increasing his protein levels you can help his heart as well as his kidneys work better.
