If you just brought home your German Shepherd puppy or you are just looking for a way to get closer to him, you can learn how to bond with him in a variety of different ways. If you have a good bond with your shepherd or any dog breed for that matter you are going to help to create a far more meaningful relationship between the two of you that will last a lifetime.
Understand that the more quality time, not just time, but quality time that you take to spend with him the stronger that bond of love is going to be between the two of you.
It's important that you take a very active part in the training of your German Shepherd. It's probably a good idea, if you can afford it, to sign the two of you up for some sort of obedience training. This is not only going to be a great way to help your relationship grow but it will also train your dog how to be very well mannered and he will become the model dog citizen.
This will also help him to understand and realize that you are a very good leader and this is comforting to all dogs. If you can't afford obedience training or there are no training classes in your area then you can always go out and invest some money in a good training book for dogs. You only need to spend about thirty minutes a day training your dog in order for him to well trained in the basics.
Make sure that you have consistent rituals that are performed on a daily basis with your dog. For instance after you get home from work try having a dog treat he likes in your pocket ready to give to him. Or you can give your buddy a nice soothing massage every day or take him with you in the car when you are going to run a few errands. These small yet powerful activities will help your bond become stronger.
Having the time to spend quality time with your dog is extremely important. In fact it is no different than when you spend quality time with your children, if you have any. It's just as important to dogs as it is to children.
If you have to work full time of course it's going to be hard to spend a lot of time with him, but you really need to commit some time with him. Get up early enough in the morning to take him out for a walk prior to you going to work each day or make it something that he looks forward to doing with you after you get home from work.
Even if you can't take him for a walk, why not let him lay next to you if you are on the computer, or have him by your side when you are relaxing and watching TV. These simple efforts will mean a lot to your dog and can be quite a satisfaction to him. Dogs by nature are extremely social and they need to be able to be close to those they love.
Plan a special retreat just for the two of you. If the weather is nice plan a trip to the beach, the park or up in the mountains where there might be streams or small rivers that will excite him. Take a lunch and plenty of treats and water for him on your retreat. Enjoying the outdoors together is a wonderful way to help strengthen the loving bond that you have between the two of you.
