Contrary to some people's beliefs a pitbull is a wonderful dog but thanks to some owners who simply are not suited to raise a dog let alone a pitbull and even thanks to some breeders, this poor dog has an unfortunate and negative tag put on him.
For the most part, poor pitbulls never get a shot from the moment they are born because they are stereotyped as being mean, crazy and are killing machines with a thirst for blood. But that couldn't be further from the truth if you raise him to be loving and friendly, just as he was meant to be. The four major things you need to do is love him, pay lots of attention to him, take the effort to train him and use your own common sense.
The day you bring your pitbull puppy home you need to show him lots of affection and be extremely loving towards your little puppy. Pet him, make sure to play with him, hug him and simply dote over him all the time. All puppies who are loved and taken well care of very seldom will turn violent and mean or ill tempered. It's better that your pitbull be a spoiled baby than a mean one.
Make sure that you get your puppy socialized very early and make sure they are around a lot of different dogs and a lot of different kinds of people. If this is done they will have an easier route that will make them into a far friendlier, more behaved adults. You should take your puppy out around other dogs and people as often as you can. Make sure that you continue to give him that exposure into adulthood, just keep him away from dogs that are misbehaved or ill tempered themselves because as an adult he won't back down if challenged into a fight.
From day one you need to establish that you are the dominant one in the relationship. So your puppy needs to learn early that you are the boss. If you do this early and make sure to correct your puppy when he is misbehaving you are going to have a far nicer dog. You need to make sure that you guide him with gentleness but firmness at the same time. Never mistreat him but make sure that you do have control over all situations.
Whatever you do, never put your dog on a chain, it's better if you make sure that the area you put him in outside is fenced properly or just make sure to leave him in the house when you are gone and can't take him with you. If you tie him up outside this can cause him to begin to exhibit bad behavior and may become vicious.
Make sure that you take your pitbull on walks whenever you can. It's ideal if it were to be on a daily basis, but if that's not possible just make sure that you do it on the same days and the same times so that you have him on a regular schedule for walks. The more activity he gets the happier he is going to be.
Never scold your dog for normal behavior like barking at a stranger or at a strange sound that might frighten him. It's the only way that he can communicate his fear. There is nothing wrong with him being alert as well as territorial, but you can train him to do it in a good way and not a vicious way. There is a big time difference there.
Notes: You should never leave your dog without being supervised and he should always be on a leash when you are outside with him. Don't encourage him to behave aggressive in any way, not even when you are playing. Never let your dog be alone with other animals and pay close attention to them when they are around children. They can be quite playful and may accidentally hurt the child.
